Even the “Boston Globe” picked up our story on how the whole project developed and had a telephone interview with us, before Tom Farragher (columnist of the “Globe”) interviewed the Barrys for their article.Florian and I had a very opendiscussion with Tom by phone on May, 8th. It went very well we thought. Wespoke for about 45 minutes with each other. Tom posed a number of interestingquestions. First of all he tried to understand, why we are doing all that.Within a relatively short time we hope we could make it clear to him why we areinvolved and what our issues are. People tend to forget and families tend toproduce sagas and most politicians are opportunists. This is a very unhealthybasis for crazy youngsters to start again with similar or even the same idioticand scary slogans of the Nazis. Therefore it is one of the goals of the “Vereinfür Zeitgeschichte” , the “Stadtverein” and the duty of our generation to do their best to keep the memories, good and bad,  alive and do not  allow grass to grow over our Nazi past, as somany do wish.

Presently  TV andnewspapers are full with documentations of WWII and its end, all over thecountry commemoration ceremonies, liberation of this concentration camp andthat and all the horror of it. Yesterday Heidi and I were lucky to attend acommemoration of the special sort. Our local music academy organised a big bandconcert with a lot of historical explanations in between the music, with thetitle “ Von der Marschmusik zum Swing”. It is so symbolic and right on thepoint and so optimistic. Away from military marches and the turn towards theuntil then forbidden Swing and Jazz, away from dictatorship and tyranny turningtowards democracy and freedom, away from Gestapo control and horror and thereorientation towards zest for life.

For men who felt and thoughtlike my father, the end of the war surely was welcome, but for them it wasdifficult to accept to call their total military defeat liberation as we, fromthe next generation, easily can do now. Many Austrians were victims but manyalso were perpetrators. Sometimes it is very hurtful to remember honestly andto learn from the past.

==Mrs. und Mr. Barry in Braunau==

Mai.
